The Fire Awards 2005 were presented during a special dinner, hosted by Jeremy Vine (right), on 2 November 2005:
Best Individual Contribution to Fire Safety
Winner: Jeff Leach, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service
Jeff Leach, Greater Manchester’s dedicated community liaison officer, picked up the award for his work to raise fire safety awareness across the different communities of Oldham.
Runner up: Nigel Phillips, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Jon Prater, London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority
Best Team Contribution to Fire Safety
Winner: Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service
The award judging panel was impressed by Northumberland’s innovative partnership with Sure Start, which has led to a number of successful community initiatives, including refurbishing the retained fire station at Wooler.
Runner up: Arup Fire and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s arson team
Best Corporate Contribution to Fire Safety
Winner: Kent Fire and Rescue Service
Kent received this accolade for its Making Kent Safer campaign, which has had a major impact on fire safety standards in the county – just 30 casualties and fatalities were reported in 2004/05 and the county has seen a 25% reduction in the number of accidental fires.
Runner up: Merseyside Fi re and Rescue Authority and Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council

Lifetime Achievement Award
David Evans, formerly University of Central Lancashire
David picked up this special award for his remarkable contribution to the fire industry – including his significant work in developing fire engineering degrees and courses.
