IFE Members Update

IFE chief executive Ellen Jessett on the latest news for Institution members

THERE IS still time to book your place at Fire & Rescue 2007, the major new event for the firefighting and rescue sector, which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham on 22-24 May. The event is organised by Fire Conferences and Exhibitions Limited – a partnership of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE), the Fire Protection Association, the Chief Fire Officers’ Association and CMPi.

The conference, workshop and seminar programme attracts 9.5 hours continuing professional development (CPD) validation by the Institution, and covers a range of key issues of relevance to fire professionals.

If you are attending, please visit the IFE at stand K32 in the accompanying International Fire Expo in Hall 8, where staff will be on hand to discuss all aspects of membership and member services, including IFE and International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) publications. Full details are available from the IFE website at: www.ife.org.uk/about/events.

Rule out danger

Visitors to the Institution’s stand at the exhibition will be able to purchase special slide rules that help users estimate foam application rates and thereby reduce the likelihood and dangers associated with tank fires. The slide rules are part of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and BP Process Safety publications range. IFE is working with IChemE to make the rules available to fire professionals.

Examinations

The 2007 examinations took place on 8-9 March 2007 – sincere thanks to everyone who helped by organising exam centres. Marking takes place in early May and result letters will be posted to all candidates at the end of May. Successful candidates will receive pass certificates with their results letters. Results will not be given out by telephone, fax or e-mail. The examination pass list will be published on the Institution’s website in July 2007.

Graduate Lecture

Over 120 delegates attended the 2007 Graduate Lecture, hosted by Arup, at the Arup Campus in Solihull in the West Midlands on 17 April 2007. The lecture, entitled The Art of Structural Fire Engineering, was delivered by Professor Colin Bailey BEng, PhD, CEng, FICE, MIStructE, MIFireE. The lecture was followed by a series of presentations by final-year students competing for significant cash prizes sponsored by Marsh Limited.

First prize of £1,000 was awarded to Gareth Fitton of the University of Leeds for his presentation on The Effect of Buoyancy on Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis. Second prize of £600 was presented to David Snorrason of the University of Edinburgh for his presentation, entitled Dalmarnock Fire Test 1.

Runners-up prizes of £350 were presented to Robert Ellingham of the University of Central Lancashire for his presentation, Vertical Evacuation and Movement on Stairs; Stephen McAdam of Glasgow Caledonian University for his presentation, entitled A Correlation of the Predictions of Computer Fire Models With Actual Enclosure Fires; and to Gwen Rosario of the University of Leeds for her presentation on CFD Analysis of Convection in the Cone Calorimeter.

A number of leading fire organi-sations – including Arup, Bodycote warringtonfire, Marsh Limited and IFSTA – participated by exhibiting and providing an insight into the wide range of careers open to young graduates.

A full report on the Graduate Lecture will feature in the June issue of the journal and will be posted on the Institution’s website.

Rasbash Lecture

Fire modelling… the story so far is the title of the Rasbash Lecture, to be delivered by Professor Geoff Cox, technical director (retired) of the Fire Research Division of BRE, on 19 June 2007. The event is hosted by BRE and takes place at Garston in Watford. Full details of the lecture programme for the day can be downloaded from the Institution’s website.

Once again, Rushbrook Consulting Engineers has provided sponsorship to enable 12 full-time students to attend the Rasbash Lecture free of charge. Free spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Details are available from professional development officer Helen Griffiths on e-mail: helen.griffiths@ife.org.uk.
