Construction site blaze

FIRE SWEPT through a construction site in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, on 11 August. Control room operators took the first of over fifty emergency calls to the incident at 5.20pm. Some 50 firefighters, supported by 12 fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms, tackled the blaze in the partially complete five-storey block of flats, which was of pre-fabricated modular construction. The intense radiated heat also affected nearby properties, including an industrial unit and 14 houses, all of which were evacuated. The initial investigation findings are pointing towards a suspicious cause.
