Guidance on lift evacuation

Draft guidance on using passenger lifts and escalators for evacuating high-rise buildings and underground complexes is due to be issued shortly as part of a research project, carried out by BRE and funded by Communities and Local Government.

As part of the project, models were developed to consider lift and escalator performance under emergency scenarios, including fire, terrorist attack and collapse.

The draft guidance produced under the project will cover the design and management features needed if lifts/ escalators are to be used for evacuation and fire service access.
