LONDON FIRE Brigade’s modern new headquarters in Southwark was officially opened by the Queen on 21 February. The royal party – which included the Duke of Edinburgh and London Mayor, Ken Livingstone – toured the building, from the gym and café to the critical incident room.
Situated on Union Street, the extensively refurbished building – a former Royal Mail sorting office – is the base for around 850 of the brigade’s core managerial and administrative staff.
The new building has been touted for its environmental credentials – for example, all the office furniture is made from sustainable materials, each floor has recycling areas, and high-efficiency lighting is installed to improve energy efficiency.
