Tasked with maintaining the UK’s nuclear deterrent, the Atomic Weapons Establishment is unlike any other organisation.
As one of the nation’s largest high technology research and development facilities, our scientific and engineering expertise is second-to-none. Safety is always a top priority and, as such, our fire and ambulance services have an incredibly important part to play in the work that we do.
In this fast-paced, high-profile and influential role, you’ll head up both fire and ambulance services across our Aldermaston and Burghfield sites. As well as ensuring their operational readiness and effectiveness, this will involve taking an extremely proactive approach to the ongoing development of the staff you will manage.
Clearly, the nature of our work presents unique challenges in terms of the sites themselves and the materials we work with.
As such, you’ll need to keep a close eye on the changes taking place across the wider organisation. At the same time, however, you’ll need to empathise and develop particularly strong relationships with your colleagues on the ground.
The chances are you’re currently working as a Divisional or Assistant Divisional Officer within a Local Authority or the Ministry of Defence. Ideally, you’ll have nuclear industry or chemical industry experience, but whatever your background, you must be skilled at managing budgets, manpower and equipment procurement. From a practical standpoint, you must live or be prepared to move within a 30-minute drive of the Aldermaston site.
As well as the opportunity to continually develop your abilities, you’ll enjoy a superb benefits package. One that includes 28 days’ holiday in addition to statutory bank holidays and a final salary pension scheme.
