Economic crunch hits UK market

A NEW survey illustrates the effect that the turbulent economic climate is having on the UK fire protection market, with some companies in real financial danger.

The analysis of the 100 largest companies in the fire protection market, carried out by Plimsoll Publishing, found that the current economic slowdown is affecting their financial performance.

Of the 100 companies surveyed, 24 showed no sales increases at all; 16 were selling less than they were two years ago; and 55 failed to increase sales at the same rate as their investment.

David Pattison, a senior analyst with Plimsoll, said: ‘Following the last few years, which have been largely profitable, business leaders have been keen to invest heavily, and in turn have borrowed heavily. Yet, due to the economic climate of 2008, they are seeing very little by way of return. This ambitious investment strategy has left some companies in severe financial danger.’

The analysis awarded a ‘danger rating’ to eight companies as a result of their failing business strategy. It also concludes that the value of the 100 companies as a whole has fallen by around 40% in the last 12 months.
