European project to tackle arson

A TWO-YEAR project to identify and disseminate best practice in arson prevention across Europe is being led by Northumberland Arson Task Force.

The European Exchange of Best Practice in Arson Prevention and Investigation Project is being delivered by the task force, including officers from Northumberland Fire and Rescue and Northumbria Police, in partnership with forensic officers from the Laboratoire Central de la Prefecture de Police in Paris.

Funded by the European Commission, the initiative aims to stimulate improvements in cross-border communication between fire, police, forensic, insurance and government officers working to investigate and prevent deliberate fires.

Several activities are being undertaken, including:

  • developing an extensive network of contacts in 33 European countries
  • building a database of best practice
  • producing a register of specialists willing to participate in exchanges in other countries

The project findings will be presented and discussed at The Fire Crime in Europe Conference 2008, being held in northeast England on 15-16 September. A final report will also be made available.

More information on the conference is available from Dr Rob Stacey of Northumberland Arson Task Force on tel: +44 (0)1670 534 794; e-mail: rstacey@northumberland.gov.uk
