Merseyside hazmat unit

A TEAM of firefighters has received specialist training in hazardous materials (hazmat) incidents in the USA as part of plans to set up a new hazmat unit in Merseyside.

Eleven members of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were trained to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards in Washington, DC. They will now form a new hazmat unit set to operate from Bromborough Community Fire Station on the Wirral, situated close to petrochemical plants and other major hazmat risks in the area.

Under the US training, the team graduated as NFPA hazmat technicians – a qualification accredited to Oklahoma State University. The two-week course gave them experience in the different procedures and equipment used by hazmat colleagues in America.

The team will now be looking at new kit that can be introduced in Merseyside, such as a combined pump hazmat unit. A robot will also be trialled.
