Ongoing probe into Camden market blaze

AN INVESTIGATION into the cause of a severe blaze that swept through Camden Lock Market in north London on 9 February is continuing. London Fire Brigade (LFB) has interviewed numerous eyewitnesses and the brigade now knows exactly where the fire started. However, the cause of the incident is still being determined. At the time of going to press, LFB said that the investigation is complex and there is no indication at this stage of how long it will take.

The blaze began at about 7.20pm and caused severe damage to numerous market storage buildings, as well as shops, dwellings and pubs. Around 550 people were forced to evacuate the area, including 100 residents.

The buildings involved in the blaze suffered major structural damage, despite the attendance of more than 100 firefighters with 20 appliances battling to save the structures. About 300 stall owners and employees now face an uncertain future. Reports suggest that insurance losses could reach well over £30m.
