THE BOARD of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) was pleased to learn of the progress being made in India to re-energise two former branches of the Institution. Following an initiative by IFE International President, Charles Chu, a great deal of preparatory work was undertaken by IFE members in India. It included two excellent one-day conferences held in March 2008 to support the case for re-inauguration of the Eastern Branch in Kolkata and the Southern Branch based in Chennai.
In addition, a great deal of interest was shown at the impressive Vision 2020 – Fire Safety Challenges International Conference, held on 29 February in Mumbai, India. Organised by the director of Maharashtra Fire Services, Mr MV Deshmukh, the event helped to advance IFE membership in India.
Examinations
The Institution’s international exam-inations for 2008 took place on 13-14 March. Our thanks go to all those involved in organising the examinations centres, the setting of questions/papers, and to our team of markers.
Marking will take place in early May and results letters will be posted to all candidates by the middle of June. Pass certificates will be posted along with results letters to all successful candidates. Results cannot be issued over the telephone, by fax or e-mail. The examination pass list will be published on the Institution’s website, www.ife.org.uk, during July.
In addition to the international exams, a pilot exercise to provide an examination for members of the UK fire and rescue services in Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Northern Ireland was delivered on 14-16 April. Marking and the delivery of the results will follow the same timescales outlined above. Again, thanks to all those involved.
Companion awards
Directors at the Institution’s Board meeting in April were delighted to agree to the nomination by the UK South West Branch of three members to be awarded the title of Companion. Malcolm Stuart Carmichael, MIFireE, Jan Ashley Sturgess, DMS, MIFireE, and Peter James Robinson, MIFireE were nominated for the award in recognition of their work and enthusiasm in supporting the South West Branch over many years. Our congratulations and best wishes go to all three.
USA Branch
Congratulations to the USA IFE Branch for the award of a fire prevention and safety grant by the US Department of Homeland Security to develop a comprehensive national strategy for fire prevention.
The Vision 20/20 National Strategic Agenda for Fire Loss Prevention is a project that aims to bring together fire prevention initiatives by focusing everyone’s collective efforts to address the fire problem in the USA. We look forward to hearing more about this project in future editions of Fire Risk Management.
Fire & Rescue 2008

The event is organised by Fire Conferences and Exhibitions Limited, a company jointly owned by the IFE, the Fire Protection Association and the Chief Fire Officers’ Association.
