Apprentice scheme for system engineers

A NEW apprenticeship and training scheme has been launched, in a move designed to train the next generation of specialist fire and safety system engineers. The Get Fired Up scheme, developed by Gent by Honeywell, seeks to address a growing shortage in the number of qualified fire systems engineers. It has been designed to support the Fire Industry Association’s aim of creating a more definitive career structure for young people in the industry.

The work-based scheme is targeted at technically minded school leavers from the age of 16 who are looking to gain skills and qualifications, while earning money as they train. Apprentices on the course will divide their time between college – gaining a theoretical grounding in the fire engineering syllabus – and acquiring practical experience by working for Gent’s approved companies.

Skills for Security, the industry Sector Skills Council, has worked in collaboration with Gent to ensure the scheme course, Knowledge of Security and Emergency Alarm Systems, is delivered by colleges to meet industry standards. Students will work towards an NVQ Level 2, assessed by City & Guilds, with an option to continue to Level 3.
