PRIME MINISTER Gordon Brown’s Cabinet reshuffle last month has resulted in the appointment of a new Fire Minister, Sadiq Khan MP, for England and Wales. He replaces Parmjit Dhanda.
Mr Khan’s brief as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Communities and Local Government department will cover the fire and rescue services. He will also have responsibility for community cohesion, equalities and local government.
Commenting on the move, Secretary of State Hazel Blears MP said: ‘I am very pleased to welcome Sadiq Khan to his new ministerial appointments as part of the CLG team. We have started some vital work over the past year. Now it is time to see it through. It will be a challenge, especially in tough economic times, but we have a strong Ministerial team and a dedicated department.’
Mr Khan was born in 1970, and studied law at University. He previously served as a Minister in the Government Whip’s Office, where he had special responsibility for managing Ministry of Justice legislation. He was a member of the Public Accounts Select Committee between 2005 and 2007.
