MORE THAN 4,500 members of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) receive the e-Newsletter each month. The service is provided to improve communication between members, branches and the Institution’s officers. It is a free service available to every member, and items for inclusion in the newsletter are most welcome.
To access the newsletter, members should simply go to the link entitled, ‘Subscribe to the IFE monthly e-Newsletter’, which can be found on the IFE homepage, www.ife.org.uk/, and follow the instructions.
The Institution is looking for a title for the monthly e-Newsletter and IFE members are invited to enter a competition to find a suitable name. The closing date for entries is 31 October 2008. The winner will be announced in February 2009 and will receive three years free membership. An entry form is available on the IFE website and should be returned to Helen Ross at IFE head office.
Research event
The Fire Service College’s 13th Annual Conference, Fire-related research and developments, takes place on 12-13 November 2008 at the College site in Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire.
This year, the programme contains some excellent keynote speakers: Professor Rosemarie Everton, discus-sing the uncertainties of fire safety law in England and Wales; Cath Reynolds, describing progress towards a virtual research academy and other fire-related research; and Paul Fuller and H Shaw exploring the subject, Why women should be firefighters.
The event will also feature parallel sessions covering six themes: disaster and emergency management; identi-fying and addressing community impacts; US perspectives on safety management; working with vulnerable communities; fire behaviour; and leadership in fire and rescue services.
For further information and a booking form, please go to the IFE website, or contact Helen Ross at head office on e-mail: helen.ross@ife.org.uk. The closing date for delegates to book a place is 17 October 2008.
UK fire service exams
Following on from the successful delivery of examinations for fire and rescue service staff in February and April this year, and the well-attended seminar on 19 June 2008, a further event was arranged for 19 August 2008.
At the time of writing, it is anticipated that over 20 fire and rescue services will be using the Institution’s examinations in 2009, as part of the assessment of underpinning knowledge and understanding.
Work has been completed to ensure that the examination papers meet the Institution’s international standards, while also ensuring the papers meet the needs of the risk-critical elements of the UK fire and rescue role maps. Further details are available from IFE acting chief executive officer Louise Craig on e-mail: louise.craig@ife.org.uk.
Visit to head office
The Institution’s vice-chairman Peter Holland was delighted to host a visit to the IFE head office by the president of the South West India Branch, Dr PK John, on 1 August 2008 – a visit that will undoubtedly assist with the reinvigoration of the Institution’s activities in India.
