IFE Members Update

Chief executive officer Louise Craig with the latest news for Institution members

Membership soars

The surge in IFE membership applications continues and now exceeds 12,000 – a growth of over 28% since December 2005. More than ever, fire professionals are aware that membership of a professional body brings with it additional credibility, demonstrates commitment to main-taining and developing professional standards for the sector, and shows a personal commitment to achievement.

Examination results

Last March, candidates from around the globe sat more than 5,000 examinations and undoubtedly will be eagerly awaiting their results. Examination marking was carried out by a large number of highly qualified volunteer members during the last week of April. Those new to this process are provided with training, support and mentoring; and academic staff skilled in assessment and academic quality assurance processes are on hand to provide guidance.

If you feel you have the necessary skills, experience and expertise to join the marking panels, and are keen to assist in maintaining the highest professional standards, please contact Richard Davis on e-mail: richard.davis@ife.org.uk for further information about this worthwhile professional development opportunity.

Exam results will be despatched throughout June, and successful candidates will receive a new style of certificate this year, which not only reflects IFE recognition of their achievement, but also includes the Ofqual logo, along with the logos of partner regulators in Wales and Northern Ireland. Certificates will clearly show either the achievement of specific units or the award of a full IFE qualification.

Well done to everyone who committed to examinations in 2009, in pursuit of IFE qualifications.

Fire & Rescue conference

The NEC in Birmingham hosted this prestigious conference on 12-14 May 2009, which began with the National Equality and Diversity Awards, following a warm welcome from Peter Holland, chair of Fire Conferences and Exhibitions Limited (FCEL).

Delegates heard from Sir Ken Knight, Sadiq Khan MP, Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA) president Charlie Hendry and a number of key presenters on a range of important subjects, including Reducing risk to firefighters, with perspectives from Australia, the USA and the UK, Collapse risk of timber-framed building fires, The Bain Report – Seven years on and National resilience in the fire service. Further details will be provided shortly.

Organisation of the Fire & Rescue conference 2009 took place though the FCEL partnership of the IFE, CFOA and the Fire Protection Association.

Graduate Lecture 2009

This year’s Graduate Lecture, held on 24 April, proved to be a great success again, with a wide range of speakers presenting on a diverse range of fire topics from both the private and public sector. A report on the event can be found in the 'Member News' web pages.
