ETB confirms 2010 fees
In August’s edition of Fire Risk Management, it was announced that the IFE Board of Directors had taken the decision not to apply any increase at all to 2010 membership fees and subscriptions. Therefore, 2009 rates will be charged for 2010 membership, to assist members during the present economic downturn.
Similarly, we were pleased to receive notification from the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) that the current fee collected by the Institution and forwarded to the ETB annually to maintain registration for Engineering Council (UK) registrant members will also not be increased for 2010.
IFE qualifications
There was a great deal of interest in the Qualifications Update held at Washington Hall, Lancashire, on 26 August. The focus of the event was reducing corporate risk, employer-driven qualifications, and the development of online assessment. A range of speakers presented, with open forum on key areas to take forward the views of participating UK fire and rescue services. Further details can be found on the Institution’s website, www.ife.org.uk/
There is no longer any requirement for those applying to take IFE qualifications to be members of the Institution, whether they are applying through a sponsoring employer, or as an individual. It should be noted, however, that the IFE’s worldwide branch structure can offer support for those studying qualifications, which may include mentoring and continuing professional development opportunities. Those applying for examinations may wish to contact their local IFE branch to find out more about the support that may be available.
Reflecting on BS 9999
The Technical Strategy Advisory Group (TSAG) of the IFE is holding a one-day workshop on 2 November at BRE (Garston) to share views and experiences of BS 9999: 2008: Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings. Speakers will offer a range of perspectives, including views from the architectural, fire engineering and fire safety sectors. The event promises to be not only informative but highly engaging, with hypothetical case studies and group discussions.
TSAG is keen to hear your views and welcomes your participation. To book a place, see the Institution’s website, www.ife.org.uk/, or e-mail: sarah.simpson@ife.org.uk
Special Interest Groups
TSAG coordinates IFE Special Interest Groups. At present, these cover: Fire Modelling, Heritage Buildings, Transport, and Fire Investigation and Research. Further information can be found at www.ife.org.uk/specialinterest
Details about the wider work and influence of TSAG, chaired by Mostyn Bullock, can be found at www.ife.org.uk/itn/tsag. I would also encourage members to put forward proposed articles for publication to Fire Risk Management editor, Rupert Gilbey. And, of course, latest information from the journal is available online to all IFE members at http://www.frmjournal.com/NR/exeres/CCD175CA-FFD6-4D85-81FE-8409B5D84ECC.htm?NRMODE=Unpublished&wbc_purpose=Basic&WBCMODE=PresentationUnpublished
Research conference
Places are still available for the fire-related research event, RE09, which this year is based on a partnership between the Institution and the Fire Service College. The one-day RE09 conference will take place on 11 November at the Fire Service College in Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire.
In addition to an exciting range of speakers focusing on the latest developments in research and best practice, there will be poster presentations. A cash prize will be awarded for the most captivating research project. The event also offers a wider networking opportunity, and is recognised by the Institution as providing 5.5 hours of continuing professional development.
