Influencing fire safety within the nuclear industry

The challenge

A fast-evolving public corporation, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is committed to shaping the future of regulation in the UK nuclear industry. As a Fire Inspector, you’ll have a critical role. Your priority will be to assess the design of new nuclear facilities and enforce fire safety at existing UK nuclear sites helping to shape the future of the entire UK nuclear industry.

The role
Fire safety is an essential issue at nuclear sites and ONR has a statutory obligation to enforce relevant legislation.   In this role, you’ll visit a range of sites, using your expertise to assess fire strategies, risk assessments and review management arrangements.  You’ll also assess and approve plans for new nuclear construction, modifications to existing facilities and examine arrangements during decommissioning.

An authority in your field, you’ll provide specialist advice to Nuclear Inspectors on internal fire hazards and fire safety issues.

The person

You’ll come to us with impressive experience of regulating fire safety within a hazardous industry. This’ll be supported by your extensive background in implementing fire safety solutions in a wide range of other sectors, and experience of working with architects and fire engineers when designing major developments. You’ll also have membership to the Institution of Fire Engineers, professional registration with the Engineering Council and a degree in Science, Engineering or Fire Engineering.

An excellent communicator, you’ll work with a range of colleagues and stakeholders and foster strong working relationships. While you’ll have a collaborative ethos, you’ll also be confident when working independently using your knowledge of national fire safety standards and fire engineering principles.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with these roles attracting a salary of £49,645 - £57,965 (plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if the successful individual is London based).
