SAFETY TECHNICIAN - Safety, Health and Sustainability Group (FIXED-TERM)

The Francis Crick Institute is a new biomedical research institute in central London. We are funded by Cancer Research UK, the UK Medical Research Council, and the Wellcome Trust and partnered by Imperial College, King’s College and University College London.

Important safety role in securing a safe and sustainable research environment

We are recruiting an experienced and enthusiastic safety technician or security officer with some practical understanding and experience of fire and emergency response in a large open plan building or research laboratory environment.

The Safety Technician will be responsible for supporting the Head of Fire and Emergency Response and the Head of Radiation Safety. The role will have specific responsibilities for ongoing management of the Fire Risk Assessment and for training the Crick’s Fire Marshalls and Emergency Response Team, as well as managing the radiochemical laboratory.

This role will have responsibility for supporting the Head of Fire and Emergency Response in ensuring that all fire and emergency response equipment is regularly maintained and kept “in date”, as well as liaising and participating in blue light/emergency services visits and inspections. In addition, the role will be responsible for managing the day to day running of chemical waste disposal as well as the safe disposal of other hazardous waste materials, including radiation, ensuring appropriate records are kept. Training will be provided.

The successful candidate will have experience as a Fire Safety Technician, Safety Technician, or Security Officer. Proven capabilities to respond promptly and calmly to any fire or emergency and the ability to work as an effective and influential team member and take responsibility for leading the response of others in an emergency is essential.

Demonstrable experience in supporting and being responsive to the needs of end-users and customers and showing a good deal of initiative is required. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of different stakeholders is a must.
